Hospice Wish Come True

For Maybell, her dream came true.

Maybell is a long-time resident of New Braunfels, Texas, and she spent the better part of her career as a seamstress designing and making traditional German folkloric dress attire for women known as dirndls. Known and loved throughout the community, Maybell, a Kindred Hospice patient, had a dream – to attend the Wurstfest Festival one more time and hear her favorite musician – Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express.

And so it was that Kindred Hospice, with funding from the Dream Foundation, set out to make Maybell’s dream come true. In the weeks leading up to the event, Maybell was skeptical and told everyone she didn’t think it was going to happen, but on the day of the big event, her hospice aide, Julie, came in and helped Maybell get ready – even though it was Julie’s day off.

Maybell had a shower, Julie helped her curl her hair, and she dressed up in her favorite dirndl and knee-high white socks with a matching hairband of ribbons and flowers to complete the look. By now, Maybell was very excited, but the best was yet to come.

At the Festival, Maybell and Julie sat in the front row and when Terry Cavanagh took the stage, she was thrilled and lit up like the sun! During the performance the artist stopped and took the time to acknowledge Maybell, and with a little bit of assistance she stood up and smiled as she tried to hold back her tears of joy.

For several hours later, a steady stream of women came by to visit with Maybell – many wearing the dirndls she had made for them years ago. Maybell was deeply moved, and even though she couldn’t remember everyone who came by to say hello, the fact that they remembered her meant everything.

At the end of a magical day at the Wurstfest Festival, Maybell simply said: “Today couldn’t have been any better – thank you!”
